Harrah's Reviews
Greg London, Reno's new Mr. Entertainment, is back in town and he's better than ever
Friday, 03 April 2009 00:00
The late Bill Harrah embraced superb entertainment as the glamour that attracted customers to his casinos. It’s my guess Mr. Harrah would be thrilled with the new Greg London Show.

London, Reno’s new Mr. Entertainment, is back at Harrah’s Reno. Sammy Davis, Jr., who starred on Harrah’s stages countless times, was one of America’s finest entertainers. Once again (this is a London return engagement), Sammy’s Showroom has an entertainment artist that energizes and enthralls audiences just as the big stars of Reno’s golden age of entertainment once did.

London’s “Icons” show, embracing impressions of a vast array of stars, thrilled audiences for an extended run last year. The entertainer is a one-man MGM – the studio that proclaimed it had “more stars than there are in the heavens.” His new show is called “Iconman” and it’s terrific. London impersonates some 60 stars in a 90 minute show that is so much fun, and so entertaining, those 90 minutes simply evaporate. He doesn’t just reach for the stars, he strikes gold.

A very glib Kermit the Frog is back playing opposite a very speech challenged Ozzy Osbourne. The incomparable Willie Nelson is on board along with the sensational trumpet playing of Louis Armstrong. The show is launched solidly into orbit by the excellent live music of Peter Supersano (keyboards), Chris Cook (drums), Barbara Leoni (guitar), and Danny Leoni (bass). Two gorgeous girl dancers (Brittany Irwin and Hanna Freeman) sing as fabulously as they dance. Danny Leoni (the one in the band) is London’s sidekick in humor, and - much like dogs and kids - he’s a scene stealer.

The script by London, Paul Miller and David Taylor is quick-witted and fast-paced. Donny Weaver’s quick-change costumes are just right for every occasion (stars, after all, must look like stars). Shirley Paxton’s lighting is absolutely magical. Mark Cockriel and Nick Brill’s sound designs resonate without deafening. (Good shows never deafen. Bad shows often do.) David Taylor’s direction creates the split-second timing that makes the whole show zing.

London lights up Sammy’s Showroom with one of the very best shows to ever grace that legendary room. Greg London’s “Iconman” is a very special entertainment package. Mr. Entertainment is back, and Harrah’s Reno has him.

Greg London’s “Iconman” can be seen in Sammy’s Showroom at Harrah’s Reno, 219 North Center Street, Reno, Nevada, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 8 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays at 9 p.m. $31.95 and $36.95 plus fees. For information call 775-788-2900 or go on line at HarrahsReno.com.
